Roxxannia's iBiomed Journal

What is iBioMed?
An interdisciplinary program allowing students to build strong foundation in both engineering and health science areas. With its special health design course, student will look into computation, materials, design and graphics to complete their health solution design projects

Why McMaster?
Health Science and Engineering are the two top-ranked programs in McMaster. Combining the two most prestigious programs and being the first 5-year iBioMed program across Canada, this program is elite for students who want to strive into Biomedical engineering while doing normal engineering/health science

Why iBioMed?
With my love for engineering and interest in health science, the iBioMed program is definitely the best fit for me. The additional Co-op program alongside adds value to this integrated degree which allows student to not only develop book knowledge but also applying knowledge to real working experience.

BRIGHT, ENTHUSIASTIC, LOVE TEAMWORK!

Hi, my name is Roxxannia Wang. I am a first-year iBioMed student in McMaster Univeristy. I am super excited for this program and cannot wait to accomplish more projects in this Health Design course.

On this website, I will log every projects, and every milestones within the subject. I hope you can anticipate the progress of my projects, as well as for the final deliverables.

I am very interested in biomedical engineering that I believe this integrated area with be the future of many unsolved problems and diseases. In the future, I hope I will be able to change the world with my own biomedical device or medicines, or technology. I am dedicated to bring a better health system and more cures to the incurable diseases in the world right now.

Give me some time, and I will show you all I got.

Wrist Development for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is usually referring to the numbness of hands, or "falling asleep". It is known as paresthesia and wrongly referred to poor circulation.

The numbness is caused by the pressure on the median nerve, which results in pain in hand or forearm. Thus, the pain restricts daily uses or motions of hands or forearm.

Mayo Clinic, 2014
There are two main ways to treat carpal Syndrome.
1. Conservative: using a wrist orthosis to limit wrist movement and slow down the progression of the syndrome

2. Surgery: open up carpalligament to relieve Median nerve

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases
Gastrointestinal tract is a major, important component in the digestive system for every animal. The GI tract includes esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and anus; pancreas and liver also play an important role in the digestive system as an aid.

Inflammatory Bowel diseases have the characteristic of chronic symptoms. There are two main types of inflammatory bowel diseases: ulcerative colitis (large intestine and rectum), and Crohn's disease (ileum of the small intestine).

What is Ileostomy?

Our patient, J. Peterman suffers from inflammatory bowel disease, which results in an ileostomy opening by connecting the ileum to the abdominal wall. All the digestive food will be collected by an ileostomy bag/pouch attaching on the outside of the body. There are different sizes,

J. Peterman has a concern of the inconvenience burping of his ostomy bag as he has a long period of working time. Our goal is to design an improved ostomy bag which solve his concerns.

Hip to be squared
Hip Anatomy
The hip joint consists of a dome-shaped acetabular socket and synovial cavity. The femoral head rotates in the acetabulum of the hip bone. The femoral head sits on the femur stem which supports the whole body weight when standing. When the rotation motion of the femoral head in the hip bone becomes painful and shows a limited range of motion, a total hip arthroplasty may be prescribed. The common cause of the symptoms are due to rheumatoid(Inflammation) , degenerative arthritis(wear of cartilage), hip dysplasia and trauma.

Total Hip Replacement

Total hip replacement, or Total Hip arthroplasty, are designed for patients who suffer from hip diseases which affect their mobility of hip and cause pain. It is an artificial hip that mimics the real hip; the components are femur stem, femoral head, acetabular liner and acetabular socket. The components vary from case to case as each patient's need is different and technologies improve over time. The material selection of the hip replacement is also critical in the implant. The materials' elastic modulus, toughness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance are extremely important to maintain the patient's health and extend the service life of the implant

Track and Field
Project Summary
In Design project 3, we are off to design a wearable device that inputs data from a sensor and provides meaningful output to an end-user. We will be working with a Raspberry Pi, a suite of sensors and output devices (to be chosen), and solid modelling files. The biggest difference between this project and the previous ones is that DP-3 is less defined and an "original" concept from scratch, instead of just modifying the current existent prototype.

Definition of Wearable Device
A wearable device, such as Apple Watch, Fitbit, smart gloves, they are all devices that are designed to assist our life better, providing feedback of inputs and converting the inputs to certain information output to alert or inform the users. The wearable device should face a large group of end-users, broaden applications to assist more populations.

Not a Pun, It's Real Life
Project Summary
In Design project 4, we are off to find a design solution for the community - one of the two clients request and solve their concerns. The possibility of the end product in unpredictable, it could be a software, mechanical device, electrical device or even a mechatronics device.
Patients Interview
The clients of this projects are McMaster students who voluntarily became the clients of this project. They are Lauren and Ms. Liu. We were provided opportunities to closely interact - interview the clients and find out what aspects they are struggling with and what we can do to help them, what they would love to have to solve their concerns. Through this opportunity, we have also learned that many students with SSA are still not fully supported due to the limited resources.
