Milestone 1
Team Charter
Starting October 28, 2019, a new design on hip implant has been given to us. This time, I am in group with Danny, Jordan and Kate.
The team role selection is based on DP - 1 that we cannot repeat the role that we were for the last project. This time, I am the subject expert who is responsible for the source database - research on related topics, cite all sources that have been used throughout the whole project.

Patient information & Diagnosis
Our patient Jackie Chiles has been struggled with hip pain for almost 50 years. At the age of 10, Jackie started to develop limping motion while walking and place more weight on the right leg compared to the left. Though the pain was mild, the painful feeling was more pronounced by leg movement. Jackie's hip problem had influenced his daily activities. With placing too much weight on his right hip, the pain in both hips had caused him to rest in bed for days. Before his teenage years, regular swimming helped Jackie to relieve his hip pain and improve range of motion.
During his teenage years, swimming regularly was a huge committment. Jackie's hip condition was pronounced and the range of motion had gotten less and less. It was already a challenge for him to walk more than a few minutes.
In Jackie's adult age, working in a job with minimized activity gave him a relief feeling while sitting. However, the pain while walking cannot be neglected and even a cane was required to assist his walking.
According to the testing summary on the right, it is obvious that there is very limited range of motion in Jackie's left hip. Pain assessment of 7-9/10 indicating the patient is suffering from associated unbearable hip pain. According to his hip X-ray below, the patient's left pelvis (the acetabular socket) and femoral head part are greatly deformed due to the disease and wear off in these years, resulting in his unequalized leg length.

Need Statement
Based on the patient's condition, we came up with the need statement: Design a biocompatible medical device for Jackie Chiles who has Osteoarthritis caused by Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, to minimize his pain and increase range of motion in his left hip and therefore increase his quality of life

What is Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease?
-
Occurs during childhood and occurs due to temporarily cut off of blood supply to the femoral head (ball part) of the hip.
-
This lack of blood supply causes for the bone to die and gradually break apart and loose its shape
-
This disease is five times more common in males than in females.
-
Most common in children between the ages of 4-8.
What is Osteoarthritis?
-
The most common form of arthritis
-
The deterioration of cartilage which cushions the ends of two connecting bones and smooths the movement of the joint by minimizing friction
-
Components other than the cartilage around the joint are also affected by osteoarthritis
-
Bone shape can be altered due to friction and grinding between the bones
-
Connective tissues may deteriorate
-
Inflammation in the joint lining
-
the damage to the bone is irreversible
-
Common symptoms include:
-
Pain involved in joint movement
-
Stiffness in the joint with loss of range of motion
-
Tenderness when pressure is applied
-
Loss of sensation at the joint
-
Bone spurs (extra protruding bones around the affected area that affect the movement and cause pain)
-
Tissue inflammation leads to inflammation
-
